Petition and Statement related to the April 6 Movement in Sorokdo, Goheung are documents related to the ‘Demonstration for Retirement of Director Kim Sangtae (1953)’ and the ‘Sorokdo April 6 Movement (1954)’, through which Hansen’s Disease patients raised their voice against wrongful practices and human rights abuse of the Sorokdo Rehabilitation Center and requested freedom and human rights. In the early 1950s, with the inauguration of Director Kim Sangtae, Sorokdo’s systems and practices returned to those in the times of the Japanese occupation with strict regulations and stronger discriminations and control applied to the patients. The patients wrote a petition listing problems and misdeeds, and relevant statistical table of commodities. When the petition and an open letter sent to newpaper agencies failed to arouse public interest, they continued on with their resistance by announcing a statement. The petition and statement testify to the progress and substances of the April 6 movement and are considered as significant historical materials that demonstrate the patients’ cry for freedom and human rights. |
