Commemorative Project of the 100th Anniversary (2016)
Sorokdo National Hospital celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment for three days from May16 to May 18, 2016.
The first day featured Happiness Festival, Home Coming Day, which is a gathering of all former Sorokdo staff, Hanmaeum Music Concert, unveiling ceremony of exhibits, and a three-day international symposium on the subject of the history of Hansen’s disease and human rights.
On May 17, the date when the hospital was established 100 years ago, the ceremony for commemorating the centennial of the hospital and the 13th Hansen’s disease patients’ day were held. They were attended by then Prime Minister Hwang Gyoahn and many other distinguished guests, including Sister Marianne, who devoted her life to Sorokdo. The ceremony was followed by joyful festivals including a singing contest and athletic contests. At night, KBS Open Concert ended in great success.
On the last day, a volunteer day event took place to honor volunteers who have been serving Hansen’s disease patients for long time.
Nationwide post offices issued Sorokdo National Hospital 100th Anniversary Commemorative Stamps on May 17. The stamps, which represented the history of overcoming Hansen’s disease and neighborly love, were well-received by the general public.
The 100th anniversary events drew national attention. Amid the good cheer, Sorokdo National Hospital Hansen’s Disease Museum opened on May 17, 2016 in commemoration of the hospital’s centennial.
